Supported Community Business

Nine years ago a young girl approached her father and asked for his help. She asked to have the same opportunities as other people her age and to learn what it was to work, to feel a sense of achievement, earn an income, meet friends and have a sense of purpose.

But this young girl was special with special needs and to give her everything she wanted would take more than a push in the right direction, more than encouraging words and more than a few phone Supported Community Businesscalls. In fact it was so difficult to find the support for her that the only way to make her wish come true was to build it.

So nine years ago Supported Community Business was established to help support individuals with special needs acheive everything the young girl wanted to.

To date SCB has helped over 60 people and is currently working with 23 wonderfully unique and charismatic individuals developing their skills, confidence, social interaction, knowledge and understanding of the workplace until they are ready to enter an actual job.

Packaging small DIY items, labelling products, filling crayon boxes and preparing mass mailings give simple but achievable and measurable results for them that we can monitor and support. Unlike current Social Services that place too many youngsters with special needs straight into unsupported work, we carefully monitor their progress on a monthly basis and slowly build up their skills, waiting for the right time to recommend them for an external placement, and even then working closely with Social Services to check how they are doing.

There are 6.8 million disabled people of working age in the UK and they are five times more likely to be out of work than a non-disabled person. For so many, they just want to be a part of the working world, but as a society we have failed to accommodate their needs.

Supported Community Business offers a unique opportunity support ambition in special needs individuals, and enable them to fulfil their potential.
