Answers to Questions

How fantastic is it when you ask for help and advice, and actually receive it?!

I have just had such a fantastic day. It was my first mentoring session with the FSI. I’d felt nervous on the train as I had no idea what to expect, but I needn’t have worried; Pauline and Kim are so welcoming and instantly put me at ease. And so, the scholarship began in earnest…

I’d asked Kim if we could discuss managing our in-house membership recruitment scheme, a new venture for LWT, and for me, my first experience of management. Because of Pauline’s experience at the NSPCC, Kim asked if she would be part of the discussions. It took one whole minute to dawn on me that there was a fantastic wealth of experience here, with me, eager to help! It was actually very humbling.

Lesson one for the day was don’t be afraid to ask questions. Lesson two was listen hard!

Seriously though, by the end of the session I had realised that although we have limited resources, where possible we need to segregate our database.  By doing so we will continue to appeal to our members, even if its just a tit-bit of information that will maintain their interest in our work and keep the context relevant. I also realised that I need to open my eyes and look at multiple uses for the resources we have. Dare to be creative and think outside the box.

Incidentally, in the afternoon I visited a free seminar by a direct marketing company that specialises in not for profits. It was all about the attitudes and opinions of baby boomers. Really useful and excellent value for money!!

Today it was overwhelmingly clear how early in my career I am, and just how much I have to learn. But, I’m eager and willing and ready for the future!
