Lainey K Foundation

1 in 3 people develop cancer during their lives.

Anyone finding out that they have cancer is likely to experience intense feelings such as fear, anger, desperation and depression. Having young children will be an added worry - fear about their future, concern over maintaining a normal life for them, anxiety about shielding them from the process of treatment, recovery and diagnosis.

On top of all this, many people who are diagnosed with cancer face financial problems – due to reduced working hours, travel for treatment, diet to maintain health. According to a Cancer survey (2006) 28% of cancer patients with children under 18 had difficulties keeping up with financial payments. That is nearly a third of families that have a serious worry other than the already enormous impact of cancer.*

Our Vision

To relieve anxiety and the burden of financial hardship on young families experiencing cancer.

Our Mission

Supporting young families living with cancer.

Our Support

The Lainey K Foundation awards grants to low/medium-income parents suffering from cancer at Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield, with support and sign-off from healthcare professionals working with the parent. Through this process, each parent with cancer who wishes to apply for a grant, is supported by their healthcare professional making the process simpler and less burdensome.

Our Background

The Lainey K Foundation has come about from a real understanding of these pressures. Elaine Kennedy Martin died of cancer in 2005 after being treated at Weston Park Hospital. Her husband, Paul Martin, now Chairman of the Trustees, set up Lainey K Foundation in her memory. Paul realised that coping with his wife’s cancer would have been even worse for the family if they had had to worry about money. So, the idea to support families who weren’t as financially secure was formed.

The grants are awarded for a number of different needs:

- Utility Bills
- Childcare
- Domestic Appliances
- Travel

Thanks to LKF’s work since 2006, 36 young families have benefited from financial support varying from £500 to £1600.  These awards have cleared backlogs on utility bills and rent arrears for families who are struggling to cope with all the pressures and added financial burden of cancer.
