Patrick Cox was born in Dublin, Ireland. He started out as a development tool maker engineer and has 13 years experience in prototype and development in both the motorcar and consumer goods industries.
Patrick is a relative newcomer to the charity world and founded Male Cancer Awareness Campaign in 2005. The charity is daring and hard-hitting, raising awareness and education of male cancer. The charity was nominated for Britain’s most admired charity in 2007 for innovation. He is still heavily involved as volunteer CEO and is deemed a world testicle running expert.
In late 2007 Patrick founded his second charity, the Small Charities Coalition and is the Chief Executive. He said: “Necessity is the mother of all invention. I founded the Coalition to provide innovative solutions to the direct problems that small charities face”.

Put simply, managing risk means developing a practical plan to identify, deal with and minimise the adverse effects of the unexpected on your organisation, if or when it happens. Managing your risks can help to create a safer and more efficient working environment within your organisation. It will also help you to comply with the law. This session will help you identify risks your organisation is facing and take the important steps forward towards a safer, protected future for your charity.

Michael Sinha
Michael qualified as a lawyer in 1986 and has practised in London since 1988. Michael specialises in all aspects of commercial property with substantial experience of high-end investment property work and landlord and tenant matters in the commercial and retail sectors. He is highly experienced in dealing with the Not for Profit Sector having for many years advised NHS Trusts, housing associations, charitable organisations and religious denominations, as well as government organisations, on the acquisition, disposal and management of their property assets. Michael is a trustee of the FSI.

Martin Ackland
Martin is a solicitor specialising in commercial property. His main practice areas are real estate and trusts including charitable trusts. He has acted for a number of charities and has valuable knowledge of the framework and rules in which they operate. Martin has acted for the St Andrew Holborn Charities, SCOPE, FSID (Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths), the Scout Association and numerous private trusts. He advises these clients in relation to their property interests, governance issues and their business affairs generally.

Rebecca Patrickson
Rebecca is a solicitor in the company commercial department, acting for businesses and charities of all sizes. Rebecca has experience of advising a range of charitable clients on the commercial aspects of their work, including advising on commercial agreements, the constitution of organisations and the formation and registration of charitable entities.

Making sure you know the law and fundraising
1.30pm – Workshop Room Three

Michael Sinha, Martin Ackland and Rebecca Patrickson are solicitors with the London law firm Cumberland Ellis. Their workshop will consider the legal and regulatory framework surrounding fundraising and money laundering. The session will include an outline of the legal duties and responsibilities of charity trustees and practical examples to illustrate the issues involved.
The workshop will consider the need to be vigilant to ensure that your charity is not being used as a front for criminal activity. A summary of anti-money laundering procedures show trustees and charity professionals how to identify potentially suspicious transactions, alongside practical examples of how charities can and have been used to launder “dirty” money.
The session on fundraising will consider the legal framework of the Charities’ Act 2006 and Codes of Practice and will consider the issues relating to raising money from risky pursuits (e.g. parachute jumps), street and door to door collections and running a lottery.

I help people and organisations to reach their true potential, deliver outstanding performance and maximise sustainable growth.
For me that’s about the triple bottom line of developing people, profit and our planet. I facilitate teams to collaborate, create and innovate and I design and deliver training on socially intelligent leadership. I train teachers to develop the creative abilities of pupils and engage in their learning.

As an NLP Master Coach I provide executive coaching support to individuals and work with teams to accelerate high-performance and fulfilment. This includes developing organisational cultures and strategies that support organisations to grow. I am particularly interested in how diverse groups can work together better to improve outcomes for children, and what this means for us as ethical leaders in a new era.

I hold a 1st class honours degree in French, Psychology and Artificial Intelligence and it’s as a result of my studies that I developed a passion for all things French (which now includes my husband Nicolas!) and a passion for learning about learning. I love discovering more about how our brains work, such as how we are hard-wired for altruism and connecting and empathising with others. I also love to meet new people, so please feel free to contact me: Rebecca@adropintheocean.co.uk

Creativity Handouts

In this interactive session we’ll look at ‘What is Creativity?’ and ‘why does it matter?’ Having identified ‘How creative am I?’ we’ll look at ways to develop your personal creativity and a range of ways to generate new exciting ideas. Taking a current challenge you’ll develop new ways to look at the problem and some novel ideas to help you to solve it. You’ll come away from the session with some groundrules for personal creativity and a pocketful of ideas!

Creative Collaboration – Problem-solving for organisations
Workshop Room Two – 3.00pm

Problem Solving for Organisations Presentation

This practical session will get you working with others creatively to develop some innovative solutions to challenges that your organisation might face. Using a simple but powerful technique you will identify the core challenge and work together to create strategies and concepts to take you forwards. We’ll identify ways to gain other’s buy-in to your new thinking and you’ll come away from the session with some groundrules for creative meetings.

Since December 2007, Graham has been the CSR Manager for Legal & General Group. His previous 7 years in Legal & General’s Wealth Division were spent as Head of Operations for Banks and Building Societies and Investment Operations. Prior to this Graham worked for Hewlett Packard in the US and Asia.
A corporate view of the world is balanced with Graham’s involvement as Head of the Trustees for the charity Sail 4 Cancer, whose role is to provide people affected by cancer with respite by simply getting out on the water with their families whether that be for a days sailing, a week on holiday on a cruise or a sailing expedition.
Graham’s first dip into what has now evolved into a career in CSR was sitting outside a local supermarket aged 8 with his Dad selling Bricks for £1 to help build a local community swimming pool in what is believed to be the first ever “Buy a Brick” campaign.
More Details of Legal & General’s CSR programme can be found at www.legalandgeneralgroup.comcsr. More details of Sail 4 Cancer’s activities can be found at www.sail4cancer.org

Finding the Value of your Intellectual Property
11.30am – Workshop Room Two

As charities, we often undervalue our knowledge and services to donors, failing to shout loudly or effectively enough about our brilliant services and impact. What we are even worse at is recognising the value of our knowledge and services to the business sector – our Intellectual Property. This session will introduce this ground breaking thinking, challenge your perception of corporate relationships with charities and get you thinking about how you can package up your IP to boost income and opportunities to your charity and improve performance and behaviour in companies. A win win session for the entrepreneurial thinker.

Charities spend other people’s money and are unlikely to be funded in the long term if they cannot show that they have been responsible stewards of the money entrusted to them. Would you be happy to give money to a charity that lost it?
This informative talk will cover: setting up good systems for new charities, budgets, cash flow, bookkeeping, computerised accounts, financial controls, tax, gift aid, financial reports for trustees, proving that grants have been earned, full cost recovery and accounts for the Charity Commission.
Tom Fitch will then go to discuss the key financial strengths that small charities will need to survive the recession. These include having several funding streams, good controls to reduce the risk of fraud, and regular financial reports for trustees. We will then look at the threats and opportunities that the recession may provide for small charities. This should be a very valuable hour.

Writing a Business Plan
10.00am – Workshop Room Three

Writing a Business Plan Presentation

Having a business plan is even more important in our increasingly chaotic world – organisations with a strong sense of purpose and the ability to plan a way through the complexity are best positioned to adapt to the rapid changes we are all experiencing. John Nuttall, a volunteer consultant with The Cranfield Trust, will lead a workshop to help us to fulfil this need, tell the story, plan the way and create a meaningful business plan. The process can offer as many benefits as the plan itself; bringing together your board and team to focus on how to crystallise your organisation’s strategy, understand your costs, and explore different ways of making it work. Make sure your business plan is a tool to help you and your colleagues make your venture a success as well as telling a compelling story that communicates your purpose to your customers and supporters.
