Small charities from across the UK raised thousands of pounds on a warm June day as the third FSI Challenge took place at Thornbridge Hall in Derbyshire on Saturday, June 5^th. The Challenge is again running in 2011.

The FSI Challenge, which features 4km and 10km courses through the Peak District, was developed to provide the opportunity for small charities to maximise their fundraising income and raise the profile of their organisation.  The 2010 event attracted more runners and supporters than ever before, providing funds for 18 charities.  The Challenge is free to participate in and charities receive support packs with training tips and advice to maximise sponsorship income. 

The FSI, which is itself a charity, was launched by Emma Harrison to support small charities with the strategic and financial support they need to carry out their work.  The Challenge is part of a programme of fundraising events administered by the FSI and delivered free-of-charge to small charities.

Harrison, who is chairman of the FSI, said: “Derbyshire turned on a perfect day as runners, walkers and supporters descended on Thornbridge Hall for the third FSI Challenge.  It was great to see so many new faces and new charities taking part.  The feedback from participants was wonderful, with many of the charities saying they have raised more money in 2010 than ever before, proving that good people are still ready and able to support good causes.”

Claire Adlington from Down’s Syndrome Derby, one of the charities taking part, said: “We feel extremely privileged to have been included in the Challenge at Thornbridge Hall. It allowed us the opportunity not only to raise money for our amazing group of young people and their families, but also to share the day with and to feel a part of a much larger family headed by the FSI. We are indebted to our participants, their supporters and of course to the wonderful staff at The FSI who cheered us every step of the way.”

The Small Charities supported in 2010……

 The 40-minute non-denominational service includes readings and music, and culminates in the announcement of the 2010 FSI Scholar.  This service is all about celebrating the individuals and organisations whose outstanding work builds better communities for all of us.

 The service is for everyone who contributes to the impact of the small charity sector including staff, trustees, volunteers, beneficiaries and funders.

 After the service, guests will head to the church gardens for a buffet picnic and to meet others from across the sector.

It’s 2010, it’s back and it’s better than ever!

In 2009, hundreds of charities across the UK raised money through the FSI Car Draw.  It was such a success that it is back to 2010 – with the winner receiving a brand new MINI First and every ticket buyer helping out small charities.

It is free to take part and the registration process is simple.  Once you’ve registered you receive paper tickets and an online sales link – then all you need to know if tell everyone you know about it and get selling! 

You will need to register for the FSI community via the ‘login/ register’ tab at the top of the FSI website which will extend out into a banner where you can click ‘register now’. Once you’ve registered, you will see a link to register for the car draw inside the online community. Please note that this is a new process and is different to the registration process of the 2009 Car Draw.

The Car Draw is open now and runs until the 6^th of September with the winner drawn at the FSI Forum on the 14^th of October.  So register now to maximise your fundraising and ensure you can enjoy the fun of this great event.

We will provide you with everything you need.  During Small Charity Week there is a whole day devoted to the car draw with online competitions and tips for maximising your fundraising impact.

Step by Step Guide for Charities

Step 1:Register to take part

• Your charity can register to participate in the draw within the FSI Community. Simply click on the purple tab at the top of this screen to join via the FSI Community. It’s free to register. Your organisation will need to be 100% not-for-profit with a raised voluntary income of less than £1.5 million to take part.
• You can participate online, offline (paper tickets) or both, just identify your preference in the registration.

Step 2: To take part online

• Once you have registered, within 48 hours a ‘buy tickets’ button will be added to your charity’s profile page on the FSI community.
• Send your charity page link (http://www.thefsi.org/charityprofile/your-charity-name) to your supporters and they will be able to buy tickets online to support your charity, simply by clicking the buy tickets now link and completing their details, and selecting to support your charity.

Step 3: To take part offline

• Once registered, the FSI will send you the number of paper tickets you requested and you can start selling them for £2 each.
• Make sure you fill in the information requested on the ticket stubs otherwise the ticket will be void.

Step 4: Promote your tickets to increase your fundraising

• Write a news story on your website and in your newsletter.
• Add a signature to the bottom of all emails that lets everyone know about the Great Big small Charity Car Draw and where they can buy a ticket.
• Set up a link to direct supporters across to buying the tickets through your charity profile page on the FSI website (if you are participating online).
• Send an email to volunteers and supporters (don’t forget to tell them where they can buy tickets!).

Step 5: End of Draw

• On 20th September 2010 the draw closes and you must stop selling offline tickets. Online tickets will no longer be available to buy.
• If you participated online, you don’t need to do anything apart from stop advertising tickets.
• If you participated offline, you must send sold ticket stubs, money from ticket sales, unsold tickets and your returns form back to the FSI by 20th September 2010. If you do not send these back your tickets will not be entered into the draw and the sales will be void.
• The draw will take place on 14th October 2010 at the FSI’s Forum for small charities and the winner announced and contacted. The winning ticket number will also be placed on FSI website.
• By the end of November, the FSI will transfer 95.2% of ticket proceeds to the participating small charities, in direct proportion to the number of tickets each charity sold.

Step by Step Guide for Supporters

Step 1: Pick a charity

Make sure the small charity you want to support is registered in the draw or select one of the fantastic small charities already participating here. If the charity you wish to support is not registered, why not send them an email and encourage them to take part.

Step 2: Pick type of ticket

Choose to buy online or contact the charity to buy paper tickets from them in person. Note: not all charities will register for both options.

Buy a ticket online simply by clicking the button below. This will take you through to a payment page where you will enter your payment details, select how many tickets you wish to purchase and which charity you wish to buy them in aid of.

Tickets are available to buy from 7^th April to 6^th September 2010, when the draw closes.

Step 3: Spread the word

For every £2 ticket sold, the charity receives £1.90! So, get your friends, family and colleagues involved and raise money for small charities at the same time as being in with a chance of winning a stunning new MINI First.

Step 4: Cross your Fingers

The draw will take place on 14^th October 2010 at the FSI’s Forum for small charities. The winner will be contacted and the winning ticket number will be put on http://www.smallcharitycardraw.co.uk

Lottery Rules

The FSI Lottery Policy

Key things for participating charities to remember:

• ALL tickets must be sold for £2.

• Tickets must not be sold to under 18 year olds or vulnerable persons.

• You must stop selling tickets by 6th September 2010.

• You must send all unsold tickets, ticket stubs and money to the FSI by 20th September 2010 or the ticket numbers will not be entered into the draw and the sales will be void. Please note that the FSI will not accept cheques from your supporters.

• The FSI is the license holder (licensed with the Gambling Commission; no. License number 019816-R-302937-001 (remote) and 019816-N-302938-001 (non-remote)) and promoter of this lottery and this fact must be stated in all advertising.

• Advertising must be conducted in a legal manner – please see information on the Committee of Advertising Practice website www.cap.org.uk/cap/advice_online/advice_online_database/ and view the Advertising rules for charities document.

• Tickets cannot be sold on the street and it is the responsibility of the charity to ensure that ticket sales are conducted in a legal manner.

• You must be a small charity to benefit from this lottery – this is a 100% not-for-profit organisation with an annual raised voluntary income of £1.5 million. If the charity is not of this income size and a winning ticket is picked, it will be null and void. The FSI will make random spot checks on size of charities participating. Down Syndrome Derby. Our charity exists to make a positive difference for individuals with Down’s syndrome and their families in the East Midlands. Our activities are widespread and we work holistically to offer support, share positive experiences and raise awareness.

EQUINE MARKET WATCH Sanctuaries UK. UK Equine Welfare Charity “We will NOT look away”

Group B Strep Support is the most cause of life-threatening infections in newborn babies in the UK. Without preventative medicine, GBS infects around 700 babies each year of whom sadly 75 or so die and around 40 survivors suffer long-term problems as a result. Most GBS infections in newborn babies can be prevented. All the money we receive helps us achieve our goals of raising awareness about GBS, informing families and medical professionals about GBS and supporting research into prevention of GBS infection in babies, so we can get closer to our goal of families being free the trauma GBS can bring. 

KARMIC ANGELS UK - Our mission is to continue building bush schools, putting young orphans into education working with health and agricultural engagements in the Gambia West Africa towards the Gambian Government’s 2020 Blueprint in the above subjects. Our aims are to make each project self sustainable with our continued support.

Luton Accommodation & Move-on Project Ltd (LAMP) is a Christian charity whose principle activity is the provision of accommodation; support and advice, to young people aged 16 to 25, about issues of homelessness and to develop their skills of independent living.

National Kidney Federation

Onside Independent Advocacy supports people who may be disadvantaged or vulnerable to have a voice and ensure they are treated fairly and with respect and are included and involved in their wider communities. This support is provided in a number of ways: our Lifelinks projects support individuals who may face disadvantage or exclusion, by providing both 1:1 support and peer support networks.

Our Sansar is a young development NGO run by a team of volunteers, working on a number of projects helping communities that do not receive help from other sources.                                                                                                 

Target Tuberculosis. Our vision is a world free from TB. Though preventable and curable, TB is one of the world’s biggest killer diseases, with 9 million new cases every year. We are based in Brighton but work with local partners in Africa and Asia to reach the poorest of the poor.

The British School of Osteopathy

The Cathedral Archer Project (CAP) is a day centre that helps people who are homeless.  Homelessness can include sleeping rough, occasional hostel spaces, camping on friends’ floors and sofas, and squatting. The CAP is a place of safety and warmth, where homeless and vulnerable people will be welcomed and supported.  Service users include alcohol and substance abusers, street workers, people with learning difficulties and disabilities, refugees and failed asylum seekers from a variety of backgrounds and ages. 

TheFSI. Everyday small charitable organisations support individuals, families and communities and positively touch the lives of millions. On a daily basis thousands of these organisations struggle to remain open. The FSI delivers expert knowledge, strategy and support to them free of charge so their futures are secure and their users protected.

The Turning Point Trust. Turning Point is a UK based charity working in Africa’s largest slum, Kibera, Kenya to transform the lives of acutely vulnerable children and their families through a holistic range of programmes which provide access to education, healthcare, regular meals and psycho-social support.

Uganda Development Services (UDS) works in rural Uganda running a library, resource and study centre, which offers computer training and an internet café.  It also works with farming communities, providing them with the skills and knowledge to improve their livelihoods by increasing their yields and choice of crops.

The United Youth Development Organization (UYDO) is a youth-led organisation working to encourage young people all over the world to stand united against poverty, inequality and injustice. UYDO was set up to provide small loans, training and support to young entrepreneurs in the developing world, therefore enabling young people to start their own businesses and take themselves out of poverty.

Village Aid strongly believes that African people are best placed to deal with the problems in Africa. We help them by providing resources and capital so they can develop solutions. Village Aid works closely in partnership with locally based grassroots organisations that are at the heart of the communities which they support.
